About Us

InnerPlant is the place for curious people who want to create innovative traits that harness plant physiology and unlock data at scale to boost global agricultural yields and sustainability. We’re backed by industry giant John Deere and other veteran venture capitalists and are poised for massive growth as we reimagine the role of crops in our farming system, developing crops that can tell us what they need by turning plants into Living Sensors.

If you’re a dreamer and optimist, someone who believes they can change the world and want to take action to leave a positive lasting impact - this is the opportunity for you.

Job Description

The Remote Sensing Engineer will play a key role in allowing us to detect optical signals from our plants in field conditions. InnerPlant’s new plant traits allow crops to produce fluorescent signals in response to specific stresses. We use remote sensing methods to measure our plant signals. The successful candidate for this position will help design, build and maintain equipment and algorithms for detecting InnerPlant’s fluorescence in the field from ground, aerial and satellite platforms. The ideal candidate will have experience with hyperspectral imaging technology for use on vehicle- and UAV-based platforms.

Goals

  • Design, build and possibly operate detection hardware for mobile detection of fluorescent proteins in plants (including drones, satellite components, imaging boxes, or handheld detectors)
  • Work with and improve algorithms for retrieving fluorescence from hyperspectral data
  • Maintain/improve equipment and software as needed.
  • Vet and source suppliers as needed.
  • Communicate needs and updates clearly to engineering and larger team.

Skills Summary

  • Optical spectrometry (i.e. hyperspectral imagery) / remote sensing
  • Software: Python, Java, Microcontrollers (Arduino et al.), MATLAB, Drone/hyperspectral imagery processing
  • Mechanical: drones, tower-based or wheeled platforms

Education and Experience

  • Required skills:
    • MS, PhD or equivalent experience in field related to optical remote sensing engineering
    • At least 2 years of experience working with hyperspectral instrumentation.
    • Skill in most of the following categories: remote sensing, UAV/drones, data analysis, calibration of hyperspectral equipment, image processing
    • Strong scientific programming skills
    • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
    • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Preferred skills:
    • Experience with solar-induced fluorescence instruments and algorithms
    • Experience writing graphical user interfaces for computers and/or handheld devices.
    • Experience in plant biology or plant ecology/ecophysiology
    • Electrical troubleshooting
    • Plant biology, agriculture or plant ecology/ecophysiology
    • GIS experience
