Why Spreadsheets?

Spreadsheets are one of the hardest things you can build — right up there with compilers. To succeed, you need technical excellence on the backend, paired with utter obsessiveness on the frontend, partnered with a genuine empathy for users. As scaffolding for the mind used by more than 1 billion people, spreadsheets are one of the few applications that can have a universal impact on people's daily lives.

Sourcetable is a spreadsheet that syncs with your data. Our goal is to democratize information access so everyone can understand their data and make better decisions. We are a group of experienced founders, engineers and designers on a mission to build products to reach this goal. Execution will demand focus, resourcefulness and creativity. A good sense of humor helps too, but is not required.

Simple is hard

For most people, accessing their data in a spreadsheet is just far too hard using existing solutions. This is such a common yet overlooked problem that we're rebuilding spreadsheets from the ground up with data as a first class citizen. Some might call this excessive, while many simply won't understand. We know it's worth sweating the small stuff when it comes to making things simple.

Bay Area

Our AI-focused product team is based in San Francisco and works together, in person, as often as possible. We believe in-person is the best way to create a strong culture in a fast-moving and creative space. We are not hiring remotely for engineering roles, and generally prefer contractors to be based locally too.

Company Culture

This may mean nothing, and it certainly isn't required, but we have observed the following cultural notes:

• Most have started companies, and those who haven't were on founding teams.
• Most of us have either started or lived in a co-living space at length.
• Most of us are burners (late August / early September is something of an unofficial company holiday).
• Everyone is highly technical, even those in non-engineering roles.

Our stated company values, picked up at the dinner table, are "work hard, be nice". These will improve over time, I'm sure, but they are good enough for now.

We want people who can do excellent work and make good judgement decisions without requiring a lot of management. A good sense of humor is definitely helpful too, because we're going to spend a lot of time together!

We have a strong preference for people who have proven experience working in small startups and on hard things. Half our team have founded companies before.

You'll be required to take a technical leadership role in specific areas (ML, Permissioning, etc.) and adapt to specific requirements rapidly as they become a priority.

You'll also be maintaining the existing application and architecting many of Sourcetable’s spreadsheet functions.

You'll be responsible for then building out the front-end to complement your backend work and take full responsibility/ownership for each feature.

The role requires creative implementation of specifications while working closely with the rest of the engineering team to ensure awesome outcomes. Sourcetable is an environment where developers can write clean, encapsulated and tested code that results in a great product.

Product Marketer at Sourcetable - Bridging Data with Dynamic Storytelling

The Job

At Sourcetable, we provide a groundbreaking spreadsheet platform that integrates with a variety of business applications and databases. Our tool is pivotal for streamlined report automation and accessible business intelligence.

We are searching for a product marketer who not only excels in spreadsheets but also brings a unique set of skills to the table. This role demands the video production prowess of a seasoned YouTuber, combined with the ability to educate and engage customers like a charismatic presenter.

The ideal candidate will create and tell stories from scratch, with little input from the rest of the team. This will involve working with data, datasets, databases, and our data-oriented SaaS products. We have a lot of ammunition to work with including great features, AI, and a ground-breaking product.

There is also a lot of mundanity, minutia and data wrangling in this role that is — frankly — not fun, and we won't be training you for. You need to already have experience doing data work, and will be expected to drive the creative and technical processes from start to finish with little external support.

You will work closely with the founders on editorial feedback, brand narrative, and product presentation. Otherwise, you will work with a high degree of independence.
